AWA FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

The sixth annual AWA symposium was the best one so far with over ninety people attending the outstanding affair.  Mike Mahoney and Stuart Batty out did themselves.  It seems they are like fine wine—both getting better with age.  Stuart’s apprentice, Ashley Harwood, not only assisted Stuart at the symposium but also helped with the master classes as well.  Heather Ashley and Bill Poole gave excellent demos on making a hand mirror and lovely peppermill.  Comments like “I think I can go home and turn the same thing without difficulty” were heard from the onlookers making both their demos not only instructive but also simplistic enough for everyone—signs of good instructors and great teachers.

Amy and Terry were the perfect hosts at Hardware Specialties.  The new venue turned out to be much better than expected.  There were many special door prizes and a special wood pin as a souvenir.

There was a good showing at the instant gallery with many new entrants.  A host of excellently made pieces were judged by Mike, Stu, and Ashley with gift certificates to Hardware Specialties as prizes.

The Master Classes were also a smashing success with each and every attendee learning many new skills to hone their turning expertise.  Del LaRue’s shop was another excellent change in venue.

To all those members who helped move lathes, set up the symposium and take down everything a most hardy thanks.  It is only through such deeds these annual events become easily managed and smoothly run.

Don’t forget to enter your pieces in Artistry in Wood at the Northway Mall.  Also, it is never too early to start on those special pieces for the instant gallery at the annual picnic held at Jeff Trotter’s.  I believe he has ordered another sunny day for the event and employed a master chef to grill the food.

If you haven’t purchased your tickets for the Powermatic lathe raffle please do so.  The lathe will be raffled off at the annual picnic with another Jet slow speed wet stone sharpener.  Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $25.

At the next regular meeting—March 6th at Hardware Specialties— Richard Raynor will demo how to make nifty pens.  Bring a friend and introduce them to the fine art of pen making
