APRIL NEWS LETTER
SUMMER 2010 NEWS LETTER
As
many of the readers of our web site have already noted,
there has been a paucity of new material present. This
has been due to the illness of our web master, Randy
Farris, who has undergone multiple surgeries in the
lower 48. We all hope and pray he will recover and be
back to contributing to the club in the fall.
What follows is the May
news letter that never made it to the web site.
The
annual May picnic and last meeting of the ’09—’10 season
was held at Jeff Trotter’s home in Wasilla. As is
usually the case, the weather was magnificent and the
day most memorable. Arnie Geiger gave an excellent demo
on all the tools the master turners who have visited
Alaska used. Arnie show how each tool should be ground
and how to properly use the 11 different tools. After
Arnie’s demo the picnic started with grilled buffalo
brats and Copper River red salmon. Since it was a
pot-luck event everyone brought their favorite picnic
dish. There was plenty of delicious food to feed the 70
or so attendees.
After the picnic, Jeff opened the meeting and the end of
year business was discussed. It was noted that deposits
($250) will be taken starting the 1st of
September for the 2011 Master Classes with Bonnie Klein
and Sharon Doughtie schedule the last week of January
and first week of February, 2011. There will be 5
separate 2 day classes so that nearly everyone will have
the opportunity to participate. Please send your checks
made out to AWA for $250, in care of Bill Bowers, 4741
Silver Spring Circle, Anchorage, AK 99507 or email Bill
at
turningsbb@gmail.com
starting 1 Sept 10.
The
big event was the raffle. The Powermatic 3520 B lathe
was won by Dean Camery. The Jet slow speed sharpening
system was won by John Oswald. The bowl gouge for
selling greater then 10 tickets was won by Dennis
Bland. The instant gallery was also a success. It was
amazing to the founding fathers of AWA how far the
membership has come in their turnings and what great
quality of finished pieces were displayed. Dana Nordine
won the 1st place People’s choice ($100 gift
certificate to Hardware Specialties) with his curly
maple and bubinga milk can. Jerry Froesche won 2nd
($75 gift certificate) with his magnificent cottonwood
bowl. Jeff Trotter won 3rd ($50 gift
certificate) with his curly myrtle vase.
Marji Campbell, besides bringing her famous beans, was
present to have more people sign up for the Fair.
Please get in touch with Marji or Burt Biss if you would
like to demo or just be a greeter. We do need more
demonstrators for the Fair and all who have demonstrated
always have a wonderful time.
AWA
board of directors and officers hope everyone has a
wonderful and safe summer and hopes to see everyone at
the first meeting in September. Please note the events
page on the web site for meeting dates. The board
would also like to thank Jeff and Gretta
Trotter for once again opening their lovely home to host
the picnic. Thank you to all who brought goodies to the
picnic to make it a success as well.
